Prompt for January 13, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

He sipped at the scotch in his glass. It wasn’t his first of the evening and it wouldn’t be his last. Drinking had, at one point, been an infrequent event in his life but lately he was never out of reach of a bottle. That made things difficult when you were the President, correction the former President of the United States. An alcoholic should never be the person with his finger on the button, so he had resigned before he had been forced from office.

He twirled the glass in his hand and watched the slivers of ice that remained go along for the ride. Scotch on the rocks, something that his father had had every night after dinner. Just one, though, not like him where if he could remember the number of drinks it was a slow night. He took another sip and felt the burn down his throat. He was familiar with the pain as it was his one constant companion in the past six months.

“We do not negotiate with terrorists.”

His father had taught him that this was the mantra of the United States and that it was vitally important that the person who was President follow through with that philosophy regardless of the cost. Regardless of the cost. But what if the cost is your wife and daughter?
