Prompt for January 20, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

As he held his blonde-haired, blue-eyed daughter in his arms the tears started to flow, leaving trails down his face. His wife Clair looked at him and smiled.

“I thought you only wanted boys?” she asked softly.

He looked at her and the unshed tears in his eyes created a kaleidoscope effect and he saw multiple images of his dark haired wife smiling at him. He grinned, a goofy, unabashed grin of joy as he looked at the bundle in his arms once more. “I guess I changed my mind, didn’t I?”

The throat clearing behind them reminded them what they had to do. With a hurried motion Clair reached into her jacket and pulled out a packet of papers, handing them to the gaunt gentleman standing there somewhat impatiently. He took the papers, scanning them quickly, and a smile grew on his face.

“Everything appears to be in order,” he said. “The girl is now yours.”

“She is healthy, right? You said that she would be healthy …”

The man looked at them down his nose. “Perry’s only delivers the finest in babies, each one certified to be disease and defect free through extensive DNA testing and computer simulations. You have a perfect little girl, Mr. and Mrs. Milwright, a perfect little girl.”
