Prompt for January 30, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

The crew of the U.N. ship Discovery was hovering around the computer displays, waiting for the computer to finish translating the message they had received from the planet below. Even with all of the power at their disposal, the message took a long time to decipher due to the variables involved. A progress bar indicated that the translation of the 2-gigabyte message was over 90% complete. They knew it was a video but that was as much as the computer was willing to tell them.

The computer signaled that it was complete and everyone held their breath.

Captian Joyce Fairweather calmly pressed the play button on the display and leaned back, waiting for the message to be played. These were the first words that an alien race was deliberately transmitting to humans. This was the a message for the record books and her crew was going to be the first people to listen to the message.

The screen was dark and as it slowly lightened she gasped, as did everyone else looking at the display. It wasn’t the fact that the aliens were so different, it was the fact that they were so much the same. They looked as human as anyone on the bridge. The words, however, were chilling and so frightening. “Welcome home, my children.”
