Prompt for February 14, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

The constant tone from the heart monitor was just another indication that Steve was not alive but Bethany still held his hand. The battle with cancer had been long, hard, full of hope and ultimately, despair but she still held on. Their marriage had been short, just shy of three years, and in those three years he had never been cancer free, never been rid of what was ultimately going to kill him, but she still held on.

It had been just two weeks prior to their wedding when a blood test had sent him back to the doctor for more blood work. And it had been just one week prior to their wedding when the doctor had announced that Steve had cancer. He had wanted to cancel the wedding, let her have a future without the constant need to look after him, but she knew that her future was with him “for better or for worse”.

And it had gotten worse.

Chemotherapy robbed him of his vitality. The constant decline in the status of his disease robbed him of his smile. But she had stayed with him, offered him her love and that gave him hope. While to outside observers it may have looked that Steve needed Bethany more than the other way around, she knew that he was a part of her soul and that without him her own light would be diminished. She needed him but now he was gone. The constant tone from the heart monitor stopped as the doctor turned off the machine.

It was over.
