Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:
The desert road was almost impossible to see under the layer of sand that covered it. The only indication that it was there was the solid concrete base under the inches of sand that lay atop the blacktop. It had been almost ten years since a car had traveled this route, ten years since the Collapse.
When the economies of the world had collapsed during the Great Oil Crisis of 2017 the United States soon became the Separated States as each locale tried to be self sufficient. The mass killings predicted by hundreds of dystopian novels never occurred. Granted there was a period where death was more common, but that was principally due to a lack of prisons. If the court felt that someone couldn’t be rehabilitated they were executed. Prisons were a drain on the economy that could not be justified.
When the Collapse occured Brian Marshall had been a successful truck driver delivering produce and goods across the country. After the collapse he did the same thing but on a much smaller scale. He was a powerful man and what happens to powerful men? They get kidnapped and left to die in the middle of a desert with a road that started nowhere and ended nowhere.
“Let the desert eat the body,” they had said, right before they died.
