Prompt for February 29, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

She looked down at her smartphone and pressed the button to stop recording. She had her story and she had the evidence to prove it, but should she publish it? It wasn’t every day that a story of this magnitude fell into her lap and she needed to be careful. When your source informs you that a member of the Royal Family is going to “come out of the closet” you tread very carefully. Even more so when your source provides you with the details necessary to confirm the story.

Paige saw that she had two messages from her editor, asking her about the status of the story. But what should she, what could she tell him? That she had the information? That the story didn’t have any substance? She was by no means a royalist, but the idea of running with this story made her feel cheap and slimy.

Perhaps there was another way. Perhaps if she contacted the Royal Family, no, the Royal herself, perhaps she could arrange for an interview and prepare everyone for the news. She quickly scrolled through her list of contacts to find the press secretary to whom she needed to talk. With a quick push of the button she set in motion her biggest story or her worst nightmare. The next forty-eight hours would tell.

Post a link to the story in the comments.
