Prompt for March 8, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

“… happy birthday to you.”

Gregory Harmon looked around at the people helping him celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday. All three of his daughters were there, with their families and he smiled at each of them as he looked at the group in front of him. He even gave a wink to his eldest grandchild, Allysa, who had brought her boyfriend to the family gathering. He glanced at the young boy and saw that he was staring at Allysa with an expression that he himself had worn forty-five years prior. He knew that she was in good hands.

But as he catalogued the wellwishers e missed two people, his wife Dorothy, who lost her battle with cancer not two years ago and Ben, his son. His relationship with Ben had always been rocky as Ben had always assumed as the only male child he needed to exceed everyone’s expectations. His overachieving had left him cold and distant from his only family and within days of graduating he had left for the west coast. In twenty years he had only seen his son twice, the last time being Dorothy’s funeral. He missed him. Badly.

Before the tears could come he closed his eyes, made a wish and blew out the candles.
