Prompt for April 27, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

His arm felt as if it was being pulled from its socket.

As he lay on his stomach the only thing he could think of was not letting go. His head lay over the edge of the cliff and he opened his eyes to look at his girlfriend Jesse hanging from his steadily weakening grip. They had been walking along the hiking path when the side of the path, weak from the recent rain, had collapsed taking Jesse with it. He had thrown himself at her and managed to grab backpack strap, his hand curling around the nylon strap and stopping her from sliding down the cliff. She had hit her head on a rock, however, and was out like a light, unable to help him try to save her.

As he readjusted himself he slid forward a few inches towards the chasm below. He spread his legs wide, searching for something he could curl his toes around in a desperate attempt at staying on the proper side of the vertical plunge. Finding nothing he just dug the toes of his hiking boots into the soft ground, hoping that anything he did was going to make a difference.

But if he let go … nothing would save Jesse and he couldn’t let that happen. They had climbed to the top of the peak to celebrate the anniversary of their first meeting. To make the even special he had proposed her on bended knee with the glory of the valley stretching behind him. She had said “yes”. There was no way that he was going to let go, regardless of how much pain he was feeling.

Despite his best intentions, though, his fingers were losing their grip on the backpack strap and she was gradually slipping away from him.

    1. Glad you liked the opening page. There are so many different ways the story could continue:

      – she slips, he blames himself, falls into a drunken stupor, spends years bemoaning his loss, then eventually redeems himself by saving someone years later
      – she wakes up, grabs his arm, saves herself, experiences an epiphany and leaves him to search for the meaning of life but eventually comes back to him a changed person
      – they both slip, he cushions her fall on the way down, they land on a rocky outcropping, he is paralyzed from the waist down but she is okay, she experiences years of doubt blaming herself before finally coming to the realization that no one is to blame
      – she wakes up, climbs to safety but he slips over the edge, falls into a coma for six years, wakes up to find that she has moved on and we see the new relationship between the two of them

So many different combinations of events to consider.

I hope you enjoy the site.
