Prompt for April 28, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

Broken but not defeated.

His father always said that when his favorite sports team was losing, badly. He remembered Sunday afternoons curled up on the couch with his dad, watching game after game while his mom would work on getting their big Sunday dinner ready. Four or five-course meals were the norm and nothing could prevent his mother from making a meal that people would talk about until the next meal. Even if no one was coming over, which was a rarity, Sunday dinner was a special time at the Wittons. Everyone sat down at the same table, talked about the same things and confirmed, once again, that they were a family. His older brothers talked about the sports teams they were on while his younger sisters talked about clothes and the latest Hollywood gossip. He listened, enjoying that his family was just that: his family.

Broken but not defeated.

He sighed, a deep, soul-searching sigh that his secretary Margrete must have heard for she got up from her desk and took a quick peek inside his office, her eyebrow raised questioningly. He shook his head and smiled at her before standing up and grabbing his briefcase off the table. A lawyer should never be seen without his briefcase even if, he shook the briefcase, it contained nothing more than the leftovers from his lunch. His client’s life lay on the line and he was out of ideas. He disliked losing, but he disliked losing where he knew the defendant was innocent as was the case here.

He shook his briefcase again, his mind slowly gelling around an idea. Empty sandwich wrapper. Hungry. Eating. Leftovers. Fridge. Fridge!

Broken, but definitely not defeated.
