Prompt for May 1, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

The buzzing of her cell phone interrupted Carly Haygood as she was talking to her lawyer. The divorce papers were in front of her and she was discussing the terms of the divorce with her long-time friend Lester Lazenby and she was tempted to let the phone go through to voice mail. When she saw who it was from – the Marshall Police Department – she shook her head.

“I will lay odds that Ricky got into trouble again. You see why I want to divorce him?” Lester just smiled, leaned back in the chair and gestured for her to take the call. With a sigh dredged up from the bowels of the earth, she answered her phone.

“Dr. Haygood, can I help you?”

“Are you Dr. Carly Haygood living at Hunters Green?”

Yes I am officer. Has Ricky done something? Again?”

“Ricky? Ah, Richard Haygood. Yes, ma’am, this is regarding Richard Haygood as well as Annabell Haygood.”

She almost dropped the phone. Her daughter? What did her daughter have to do with this? After she had kicked Ricky out of the house and gotten the restraining order she hired a nanny to look after her six-year-old before and after school. Ricky should have been nowhere near the house. “What about my daughter,” she almost yelled into the phone. Lester leaned forward, concern written across his face.

“We’d like you to come down to the station, please, Mrs. Haygood, or we can have the police come pick you up.”

“What’s going on? What happened?” Before she could continue Lester took the phone from her.

“Officer, this is Lester Lazenby, I am Mrs. Haygood’s attorney. Could you please tell me what this call is regarding?” Lester stood there while the voice on the other end explained the situation, his face growing whiter by the second. Carly just looked at him, fear racing through her system. “I see, we’ll be down shortly.”

“What’s going on, Lester, what happened?”

He kneeled down in front of Carly and took her hands, cradling them in his own. “Ricky picked up Annabell from school this afternoon and took her for a drive. He had been drinking and ran a red light, hitting a truck. Annabell was in the front seat and …”

The wails from Carly reverberated throughout the building and all he could do was hold her.
