Prompt for May 30, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

Like everyone who entered the king’s presence she had surrendered her sword to the guards stationed outside his war room. Even being the king’s daughter did not give her the right to enter armed. She thought back to when she gave her sword to the guard, the sword that had been given to her by her grandfather. She was glad the guard had it for if it had still been in its sheath at her side she wasn’t sure that she could stop herself from using it.

“What do you mean you had to do it, father?” The use of the familial name instead of his title – king – made him look at her, a flash of anger on his face. Her father followed a strict code of conduct and part of that conduct required her to address him by his title whenever they were in public. She glanced around the room at his trusted advisors and all but one, Ryles Morphant, were looking away. Ryles had a leering grin on his face that she wanted to remove. Permanently. By calling him father in public she had broken that code of conduct and emphasized to him, and his advisors, that this was something much more serious.

“Leave us alone,” he said to the room before glancing back at her. When Ryles hesitated her father turned to him, his eyes dark with anger, and Ryles bustled from the room like the cockroach he was. When the door closed behind them the room was quiet with the sounds of her father’s breathing echoing loudly in the chamber. He closed his eyes and took a few more deep breaths before he opened them to look at her. The anger gone, replaced by disappointment. “I have told you before Cassie that you need to show me the respect I deserve when we are in public.”

“Respect? Like the respect you showed those four hundred women and children when you slaughtered them like lambs? Like the respect you showed them when you left them to rot in the sun so that any predator could defile them further? Is that the respect you want father?”
