Prompt for July 26, 2016

Complete the short story/flash fiction, that has the following opening:

“Kurt! Kurt! Are you alright.”

Hands grabbed him from behind and turned him around. Instinct, not conscious thought, stopped him from raising his gun and firing another shot. He stared into the eyes of his partner Garrison Flower, concern etched into the crease between his eyes and his normal playful eyes were grey with concern.

“I’m fine, I’m fine.”

Garrison hesitated. “And Terrence?”

“Dead. Behind the shed. I didn’t want to shoot but he wouldn’t stop, he wouldn’t stop. I tried, you have to believe me, I tried Gary.” His voice faded as he heard the sounds of people approaching. A lot of people. And there, at the front of the pack, was his charge, his assignment, Jessica van Silver, heiress, movie star, target.

“Did you find him,” she asked, “did you … stop him?”

Kurt looked at her, his mouth drying out. “I did, Jessica, but you have to understand that it’s not who you think it is. Your stalker is, was, someone you know.”

Her eyes started turning glassy and her breathing came fast and shallow. “Oh, God,” she said, her voice rising higher. “No, no, no, it can’t be, it can’t be.”
She tried to move past him but he stopped her. She fought, weakly, and all he had to do was hold her for her body to still and then, a heartbeat later, she fell limp against him as she fainted. He picked her up and carried her back to the country house she was staying in while her movie was being shot. She didn’t need to be out here when her step-brother was removed in a body bag.
